THE ART OF SCROUNGING

OR

Creative Procurement Procedures

Again, if you have an endless supply of funds and materials, you need not read further.

For the rest of us...

Many materials we use in the construction of props can be had for free or at least very cheaply. Let's face it, most of us don't do this for profit, so keeping costs down is always a consideration.

The Dumpster diver... Construction sites are always a good source for materials. Wood, PVC, foam insulation board, or what have you, sometimes it's just about the "quest"!   ALWAYS get permission from the site forman or owner before taking  materials from a job site or any dumpster.

Curbies... Around the first of the year is the best time for this activity. When people take down Christmas decorations they usually have one or two that no longer work or have been damaged by weather. Most go to the curb on trash day. Many an animated reindeer have been set free still having an operable motor! Again, it is a good idea to ask the owner before just taking something from the curb.

Yard Sales and Flea Markets... Always a good source for cheap supplies if you know how to bargain. Here you can find all kinds of things such as motors or even costumes. Don't be afraid to ask someone to plug it in and check the operation.

Friends... Some of my best stuff has come from friends for free. Let them know that you are always on the look out for materials. I got a 200 foot roll of 14/10 marine grade electrical cable from a friend who rescued it from a dumpster at his job! Always ask!
