D J's Cushman Scooter
Originaly built in 1947, it's a model 54 with a 4hp engine and 2 speed transmission.
I aquired the scooter from a friend where it had been resting out in the weather for the past 25 years. Although it was for the most part complete, the weather had taken it's toll on many of the parts, most were repairable. A testament to it's durable construction and design. The resurection began in March of 2000 with the complete disassembly of every nut and bolt. The parts that would fit into the cabinet were bead blasted, primed, and repainted. The frame was cleaned, inspected, and repaired as required. Then repainted. The engine needed only minor repair. Having no compression or spark, the head was removed for inspection. The exhaust valve was stuck open from minor surface rust on the stem. A little cleaning and lubrication took care of the compression problem. The lack of spark was cured with a new coil and plug wire. The original Champion #7 spark plug still works! A new head gasket, some cleaning and paint and the engine was done. After mounting the engine back into the frame it started on the very first kick! The body was pretty rough, but with a little pounding and massaging and my very minimal body work skills it's close enough till I can afford a replacement.
With the help of many good folks on the Cushmannet for advise and instruction and a growing list of parts from the great folks at C&R Cushman, it lives again. Here are some photos showing the progress so far... The day it came home After some disassembly After lots of cleaning, repairing, replacing, and straightening, going back together... And finally, all done...
